Chasing Skyway Gold

The sunset paddle under the Sunshine Skyway is the most photogenic hour in the bay. Here's how to time it.

There's about a forty-minute window, most evenings, when the sky behind the Sunshine Skyway turns the color of a lit match and the water goes glassy and gold. Paddlers call it Skyway Gold. It is worth structuring your whole evening around.

Timing the light

Be on the water 45 minutes before sunset and plan to be back at the launch 20 minutes after. The light peaks after the sun drops below the horizon — most people leave too early. Check the marine forecast for wind; anything over 12 knots turns the return into a workout.

  • Best launch: Maximo Park or the Skyway fishing pier lot
  • Golden window: 20 minutes before to 25 minutes after sunset
  • Carry a light — Coast Guard requires one after dark

"Everyone photographs the Skyway from the bridge. Almost no one photographs it from a board on the water at the exact minute the sky ignites."
